What is Punctuation?

Punctuation’s Definition:

We may define punctuation like this as the use of symbols such as full stops or periods, commas, or question marks to divide written words into sentences and clauses.

Punctuation Mark

Full Stop (.)	Apostrophe ( ‘ )
The comma (,)	The hyphen (-)
Question Mark (?)	Brackets ()
Exclamation Mark (!)	Colon (:)
Quotation Marks (” “)	Semicolon (;)

 The full stop(.)

To show when a sentence is finished.

Examples:

I’m grateful to miss  Anamika.	میں مس انامیکا کا شکر گزار ہوں۔
He is not a good boy.	وہ اچھا لڑکا نہیں ہے۔
I will drink water.	میں پانی پیئوگا۔
We are getting late.	ہمیں دیر ہو رہی ہے
Bring your file.	اپنی فائل لے آؤ۔

The comma (,)

To show a little pause in a sentence.

Examples:

Simmi, bring your file.	سمی اپنی فائل لے آؤ۔
If he comes, I shall help him.	اگر وہ آئے تو میں اس کی مدد کروں گا۔
Ahmad, come here.	احمد یہاں آؤ۔
He walked down the streetto house , and then he turned the corner.	وہ گھر کی گلی میں چل پڑا، اور پھر اس نے کونے کا رخ کیا۔
You can go shopping with me, or you can go to a movie alone.	آپ میرے ساتھ شاپنگ کرنے جا سکتے ہیں، یا اکیلے فلم دیکھنے جاسکتے ہیں۔

Question Mark (?)

To show that sentence asking a question

Examples:

How do you go to school?	تم اسکول کیسے جاتے ہو؟
Have you got the money?	کیا آپ کے پاس پیسے ہیں؟

Exclamation Mark (!)

To show someone is excited, surprised, and anger.

Examples:

Ouch! You stepped on my toe.	اوچ! تم نے اپنا قدم میرے پاؤں پررکھا۔
Alas! We have lost the match.	کاش! ہم میچ ہار چکے ہیں۔
May you live long!	آپ لمبی عمر دیں!

Apostrophe ( ‘ )

To show possession or contraction.

Examples:

Lata’s voice was very sweet.	لتا کی آواز بہت پیاری تھی۔
Rashid’s house.	راشد کا گھر۔
Abid’s book.	عابد کی کتاب۔

Quotation Marks (” “)

To show what someone is talking about.

Examples:

I said, ‘’ this is my book.	میں نے کہا، ”یہ میری کتاب ہے۔
The wolf said to the lamb, ‘’why are you making the water muddy?	بھیڑیے نے بھیڑ کے بچے سے کہا، ’’تم پانی کو کیچڑ کیوں بنا رہے ہو؟
“I love cookies,” said Sam. Identifying speech.	“مجھے کوکیز پسند ہیں،” سیم نے کہا۔

The hyphen (-)

Used to join word or to separate syllables in a word.

Examples:

She is very self-confident.	وہ بہت خود اعتماد ہے۔
Step-mother.	سوتیلی ماں۔
Father-in-law.	سسر۔

Brackets ()

We use the Parentheses to generally add extra information in the sentence.

Examples:

I spread in the examination last year (1999).	میں پچھلے سال (1999) کے امتحان میں پھیل گیا۔
I went to the museum with Becky (my best friend).	میں بیکی (میری سب سے اچھی دوست) کے ساتھ میوزیم گیا۔
I wanna go to the mall(even though I don’t have money).	(میں مال گیا تھا( حالانکہ میرے پاس پیسے نہیں تھے

Colon (:)

Colons are used in sentences to display that something is following, like a quotation, example, or list.

Examples:

Bring me four article from the bakery: jam butter, jelly and biscuits.	میرے لیے بیکری سے چار چیزیں لے آؤ: جیم بٹر، جیلی اور بسکٹ۔
She kept repeating: ‘’I really want the car!’’.	وہ دہراتی رہی: ’’مجھے واقعی کار چاہیے!‘‘۔
There are currently only two choices at this time: run away or fight.	اس وقت  دو ہی ان انتخاب ہیں: بھاگو یا لڑو۔
We knew who could win the game: the Eagles.	ہم جانتے تھے کون کھیل جیت سکتا ہے: ایگلز۔

Semicolon (;)

Semicolons are used to join two independent clauses or two complete thoughts that could stand alone as complete sentences.

Examples:

We sat; we waited; we went away.	ہم بیٹھ گئے؛ ہم نے انتظار کیا؛ ہم چلے گئے.
We made a lot of noise; we lost the game.	ہم نے بہت سے ہنگامے کیے ; ہم کھیل ہار گئے۔
The cow is brown; it is also old.	گائے بھوری ہے؛یہ بھی پرانا۔
